Welcome to the world of plein air painting!

Painting outdoors is very different than painting in your studio – or anywhere indoors:
more challenging by far, but more rewarding, too.

Planning is essential.

Travel Light
Think and double-think about everything you will need: not just your art supplies (paints, pencils, brushes, solvents) but everything else you will need to be comfortable enough to concentrate on your work. This should include insect repellent and a water bottle, and then supplies to present your work to the public, wired and ready to hang, and framed under glass, if on paper.

Be comfortable
Are you comfortable standing for 4 hours, or do you prefer to sit? Remember to bring a chair or campstool. If you are not comfortable, it is very hard to be creative!

Plein air festivals are a chance to practice your skills – and a place to possibly sell your work, too. Come early, to plan your subject, and watch your time. Bring several frames that fit the paper or canvas you’ll work on, have them wired for hanging.

Decide on the size of your work by the amount of time you have. It’s perfectly ok towork small…but have a large amount of fun!
